Major Printer Problems

If you’re having problems with your printer, then we have compiled some quick and simple solutions to help you solve most of.

  1. Check you have the right ink or toner
  2. Your printer has been happily printing for ages and suddenly when you put in your new cartridges it doesn’t work anymore. Check that you have purchased the correct ink cartridges or toner for your printer. Sometimes offers or printers can be slightly confusing.

  3. Paper Jams. Check your printer
  4. Sometimes the slightest rip in your paper or some dust has aggregated on the rollers can cause the sensors to create a paper jam warning. Most printers are very accessible, so just uncover you printer carefully remove the paper from the tray and the ink cartridge out of the carriage, use a damp cloth to clean the dust off the printer until you are happy you have removed as much as you can. Check the inside and back of the printer until you are sure you can’t find any paper or debris. Turn the printer off for 30 seconds, the once back on, the reload the paper and print.

  5. There is a lot of smudging on the printed paper
  6. Sometimes there might be smudging on the printed paper. You may find that parts of the printed paper are darker than others and there are dark smudges or simply parts of the printing that is missing. In this case, it may be the fuser. It’s not uncommon for dirt and dust to collect on the fuser.

The fuser is the “roller” in the printer and is responsible for the image quality. Get a wet towel and make sure you remove any dirt to get a clear printing again. Sometimes the fuser will have to be replaced because it has reached its limit. Fusers usually have to be replaced after a set amount of uses.

The printer is simply not printing

If the printer is simply not printing, then it may be a hardware problem. First, make sure that your computer is connected to the printer and vice versa. Loose wires can sometimes be a simple problem that causes the printer not to respond to your computer.

Next, open the paper tray to double check that it is not stuck. Most printers alert you if any paper is stuck but it’s always helpful to double check. Then open the main deck and see if there is anything that is stuck such as paper or any kind of debris. After removing it, the printer should function correctly.
